1. The Encampment for Citizenship The Encampment for Citizenship (EFC), founded in 1946, is a national non-profit organization that sponsors each summer a 6-week program for high school youth of widely diverse racial, ethnic, gender, religious, socioeconomic and geographic backgrounds. It seeks to provide "campers" with a compelling experience in democratic living which encourages them to become more informed and sensitive about the key issues of the day and committed to active citizenship and involvement in their home community as justice seekers. The program combines lecture and panel presentations, artistic modalities, workshops, discussion groups and field service placements in community organizations under the supervision of experienced professional staff, alums, guest speakers and other participants who exemplify active citizenship involvement. The EFC is non-partisan and has about 7,000 living alums, several scores from across Virginia, including more than a dozen from the Richmond area. Past distinguished alums include William Haddad (Kennedy White House staff), US Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, US Congressman Barney Frank, Peter Neufeld (Innocence Project co-founder), Ada Deer (Clinton appointment, Undersecretary for Indian Affairs, Dept. of Interior). Eleanor Roosevelt, Dr Ralph Bunche, Dr Martin Luther King, Jr., Dr. Kenneth Clark and President John Kennedy are among the many past visiting participants or supporters. This is a regional division of the University of South Carolina dedicated to uplifting young people in five of the most impoverished rural counties in the nation – three of which were the home of the Peeples family for five generations. The scholarship, named for Ed's paternal aunt, was begun with the small inheritance she left to Ed and his brother, Steve, when she died. She was a lifelong dedicated public school teacher in the region. The aim of this scholarship is to assist low income African Americans and others in the region to obtain a college education and a better life in South Carolina Low Country. ...............................................
